The third and final pillar that comprises Brütal Legend is the adventure game element in itself given the pedigree of game development from which this game was birthed, it's no surprise that Brütal Legend is littered with incidental dialogue, humour, surprises, secrets and plain, old-fashioned exploration. Yep – a significant portion of this game puts you in the commander's Doc Martins, waging war against the forces of glam and goth-rock from your concert stage fans fuel your army's units – and the units themselves are headbangers, groupies, bikies and roadies.
We say 'superficially' because, while you certainly do hack, slash and blast your way around the massive open world, Riggs gets to test his leadership skills in the second major gameplay element: real-time strategy. He also bandies a mean battle-axe and a balls-out attitude – a potent combination. Riggs is a flying-V wielding guitarist, but in the land of Metal, his solos become devastating magical attacks. Superficially (perhaps dangerously so, in the eyes of the general public), this is a action game in the vein of something like Fable or God of War, in a stretch – though not as extreme as either example.
Brütal Legend is a tricky game to pigeonhole in terms of genre and gameplay, drawing on three very distinct gameplay elements. In brief – because we really don't want to spoil things, the land has been under the oppression of Hair Metal – led by General Lionwhyte, and Eddie ends up getting swept up in the rebellion alongside a cast of leather-clad human survivors. He winds up in the ancient Land of Metal, revived by the Fire Beast Ormagöden, where he bumps into Ophelia, the dark-eyed beauty and target of his affection. Discreet to the point of invisibility, Riggs is thrust into the spotlight after being crushed to death at a rap-rock-pop-emo-punk 'Kabbage Boy' show. Riggs is a 'roadie' – the fella in black who makes sure concert stage productions go smoothly – you know, keeping the lead singer from plunging to his untimely demise mid-song, for instance. This Schaferesque flavour extends to the lead character, Eddie Riggs, voiced and partially modelled on actor Jack Black, but with a dab of Schafer in there too. From the moment Jack Black himself guides you through the record store start-menu (best start screen ever, by the way), you know you're in for a unique experience. As such, from the towering megalithic guitar carvings to the hand-picked metal soundtrack and sterling script littered with one-liners, never has there been a more loving tribute to heavy metal culture and game design in one. Awesome.If it's hard to separate Schafer from the project, it's because Brütal Legend feels more personal than most games out there you can pick the moments in the game that have clearly been kicking around in his grey matter for decades. This allows you to change up the tunes when driving. Play the Relic Raiser Solo nearby and you can drive in with Deuce. One of these can be found just northeast of Bladehenge, and another is on the northeast face of the mountain where the Kill Master resides.
